Micro Action Jets - A Collector's Guide

The “Micro Action Helicopter Base” play set looks like a small book when closed. The play set itself is made of thin plastic and is held closed with a velcro fastener. Funrise made several other play sets in this same format (including a “Micro Action Air Base” ). Here are some knock-offs of Micro Action helicopters that came with a new (2010’s) aircraft carrier playset.* They each have a separate black rotor piece (which does turn) and a separate black landing gear piece. Unlike the knock-off jets, there are no paint applications on the helicopters. The first three photos are comparison shots of the real Micro Action Sikorsky SH-60 Sea Hawk compared to its knock-off counterpart. The next three photos are of the knock-off AH-64 Apache which I do not have a real example of for comparison. The last two photos are the knock-offs together. * The aircraft carrier playset itself (not pictured) isn’t bad either. It is  not  a knock-off of the Funrise carrier. It has more realistic proportions and electronic features of some sort that don’t work on my copy. It has a small section of the port deck which is removable to allow storage of the jets inside the hull.

Here are some knock-offs of Micro Action jets that came with a new (2010’s) aircraft carrier playset.* They are each one solid piece of plastic with the wheel block and wheels all molded together with the body of the jet. This isn’t a problem since the wheels on real Micro Action jets don’t really work anyway (despite the claim on the packaging). The paint jobs are well done and are similar to the originals. I think they’re neat little pieces, especially the white Phantom. The first photo is a group shot of all the knock-offs together (3 Phantoms, 2 Falcons, 1Eagle and 1Tomcat). The 1989 Sears Wishbook (2 images below) - The carrier (item 4) is referred to as a “Helicopter Attack Cruiser” and came with three helicopters (one of which is the larger, ripcord-powered flying copter). The ship pictured may be a prototype as the guns on the deck are gray rather than black and there are different stickers on the island and in front of the island. The “Cargo Plane” (item 5) is shown with 14 Micro Action vehicles (including 7 “Collector Series I” jets). Side note: Item 10  is from Imperial’s “ Steel Screamers ” line. Funrise made some of their single-axle jets in a color-changing plastic. I do not have any examples in my collection but have seen some in online auctions. They were supposed to change color in warm and cold water. The packaging photos all show greenish jets that change to a yellowish color. Despite the photos on the packaging, the actual jets I’ve seen appear white in color, almost like glow-in-the-dark plastic. I’m not sure if this is due to a degradation of the color changing plastic or if they were originally this strange white color. Funrise produced eight different military helicopters and I have seven of them in my collection (I’m still missing the Apache). They seem to be much less common than the jets and they seem like they’d be more easily broken than the jets. While they lack wheels they do have main rotors that turn. Two of the ones that I have (the Lynx and the Defender) came packaged with a version of the aircraft carrier playset. The helicopters seem to lack any manufacturer/date markings. Funrise produced this large transport helicopter "playset" for use with its line of Micro Action cars and trucks. While not really intended for or very compatible with the Micro Action jets/helicopters, I thought I would include it here as it is a Funrise aircraft itself. The version I have in my collection was packaged in a a white box with a black and white photo of the contents on one side. While I cannot say for certain, this type of simple box was often used by companies for merchandise sold via catalog (rather than the more eye-catching packaging used for merchandise sold in retail stores). The helicopter came with 24 various Micro Action cars and trucks (I've not photographed them as of yet but they are pictured on the box).
